Kentucky Bison Company and Woodland Farm

KY Bison Co. started in 1996 when Steve Wilson and his wife, Laura Lee Brown, purchased Woodland Farm in Oldham County, KY. "We both grew up on farms and had a desire to return to that life we both remember so fondly," Steve recalls. "When Woodland became available, we saw it as a way to preserve farmland and return it to a working farm: a win-win situation for us and the farming community."

Woodland Farm had lay fallow for many years and had a variety of problems to restore it to working conditions. Considering the work that lay ahead, basically starting from scratch, the couple looked at up-and-coming enterprises in agriculture.

The American buffalo (Bison bison) easily won the couple over. Laura Lee was attracted by the healthy aspects of bison's low-fat and low-cholesterol meat, while the notion of restoring an ecologically friendly and historical species appealed to Steve. As part of what they termed 'an experiment in diversification', Steve and Laura Lee ordered twenty-five buffalo calves from Custer State Park in South Dakota.

"They were fruitful and multiplied," noted Steve. And, as the size of the herd grew, so did the staff of KY Bison Co. The firm, initially a four-person operation, now has twenty-two employees between the farm and meat plant.

In addition to the initial Custer calves, KY Bison Co.'s breeding stock comes from a base herd selected from top genetic lines throughout North America. The company maintains three single sire herds of approximately twenty cows, as well as a larger multi-sire herd with seven bulls. Its market bulls are fed whole, non-GMO grain rations for 360 days prior to processing. No buffalo are dehorned, and our bulls are not castrated; we do not use steroids, stimulants, or sub therapeutic antibiotics. KY Bison Co. is proud to raise buffalo as naturally as possible resulting in happy, stress free animals.

One of the company's proudest moments was in November 2001 when it was the recipient of Louisville, KY's prestigious Agribusiness of the Year Award, honoring the Woodland Farm based KY Bison Co. at the North American International Livestock Exposition. In addition, KY Bison Co. has recently started to submit entries of our buffalo into shows and sales throughout the US and are proud of these most recent accomplishments:
